So you’re having a baby! Congratulations! Don’t forget to schedule a very special newborn session just for you and your little one to capture all those sweet rolls and features before they disappear. Below you’ll find some quick tips on what to expect during your newborn session.
To get the best results, newborn sessions must take place within the first 10 days of life (preferably at 3-7 days old) when the babies are sleepy and easy to pose.
Newborn sessions typically take 2 to 3 hours, but may take longer if baby is not cooperating.
We start every newborn session with a feed. We also allow time for additional feeds if baby needs.
Babies are photographed snuggled up in various poses and in various props and spend most of the session in their birthday suit.
Babies will also be posed with parents and/or siblings.
Please have anything needed to feed the baby easily accessible. Babies with full tummies are happier, sleepier, and pose easier.
Please bring a “soothies”-type pacifier. This pacifier will not leave marks on the baby’s face. Even if baby does not regularly take one, it can be extremely helpful for keeping him/her asleep during transitions. We will only use the pacifier if needed
Please try to keep the baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session.
Plan to give baby a full feed on my arrival. We will also be feeding any time baby seems to need it.
Babies are most often photographed in their pure (unclothed) state to capture all of that newborn sweetness. I provide and use diaper covers, wraps, hats, and headbands. I welcome parents to have any special items that they would like incorporated into the session. Props provided by parent are subject to photographer approval.
Parent and baby portraits will be done lifestyle. This means you and your baby will snuggle in a chair or on your bed.
The room will be kept rather warm to keep the baby comfortable when unclothed. Please prepare to be in a warm environment.
Newborn sessions are done in home. Please prepare the smallest room in your home that has the biggest window. This is the room that will be used and the room will be kept very warm (about 80 degrees).
Sibling shots may be done lifestyle as well.
We will need the room to be pretty quiet while working with the baby and moving the baby through different poses. Please ensure that older siblings have snacks/quiet entertainment to keep them content through the session.
Baby’s safety is of the utmost importance. If I feel a pose is too risky I will skip the pose altogether in favor of keeping baby safe. I always bring an assistant with me to help watch over baby when my hands cannot be on him/her. This allows mom and dad to have some much needed time to relax.
I hope these quick tips and tricks help you when planning your own newborn session. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. I love chatting with my clients to help them feel totally at ease during their session.
